Women of Colour, Shepherds Bush Library, London - December 2016 Grove Roots Revival, Portobello, London - October 2016 In the creation of these works, TLB relies on both his knowledge and perception of his subjects and the meaningful coincidences of finding random yet relevant images, often introducing connections that only make sense upon later investigation. He asks that the viewer “look closer”, to see and perhaps question where their own gaps in perception lie and from where they form their subjectivity. His work encourages the viewer to discover the physical features of each image and perceive elements leading to further insight into the subjects themselves. Through a surgically precise collage technique that he calls ‘samplism’, Toby Laurent Belson cuts, tears and pastes hundreds of detailed photographic fragments and texts, to capture aspects relevant to the lives of his subjects which may or may not be known to the viewer.
